CALA CAPRERIA

"ZINGARO" ORIENTED NATURE RESERVE

 

First reserve in Sicily entrusted to the management of the Regional State Forestry Company.
Today the Reserve extends in the western part of the Gulf of Castellammare, in the peninsula of San Vito lo Capo which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea between Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani. The territory falls largely within the municipality of San Vito lo Capo and to a lesser extent in the municipality of Castellammare.

Set in a bay of incomparable beauty, protected by two medieval towers that watch from above, sheltered from the sea by two imposing and luxuriant stacks, stands the TONNARA DI SCOPELLO. It is a Monumental Complex that faithfully represents the ancient history of the Sicilian sea and its traditions. Today it is a natural museum overlooking the crystal clear water, historical testimony of that economy which for centuries has represented one of the main sources of income of the local people, still preserving intact today, all the equipment and tools used for fishing the tuna fish. Within the complex, conceived as an ancient fishing village, there are 14 residential units immersed in nature, which are located in respect of their original history.

THE SALT PANS OF TRAPANI

 

The integral nature reserve of the Saline di Trapani and Paceco is a regional nature reserve of Sicily established in 1995, which extends for almost 1000 hectares in the territory of the municipalities of Trapani and Paceco. The reserve, within which the ancient salt extraction activity takes place, is an important wetland that offers shelter to numerous species of migratory birds. It is managed by WWF Italy.

CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO

 

Charming town located at the bottom of the homonymous gulf along the northern coast of Sicily, where the ancient port of Segesta once stood. Equipped with a beautiful port, it still retains a lively commercial activity and has a pleasant bathing beach. Holidays in Castellammare del Golfo will make you discover a city with an ancient heart, with its nucleus of white houses facing the sea where, next to the port, stands the Castle, a cylindrical tower rebuilt by the Aragonese.

The countryside and the coast that wind from the city are dotted with stone and tuff cottages, low and undulating hills, magnificent beaches with some large stacks which, in some places, rise from a sea of unique transparency. A short distance away you can visit sites of particular interest such as the trap of Scopello and the archaeological area of Segesta, or take a regenerating break at the Segestane Baths, without forgetting the nearby Zingaro reserve.

The coast near the city is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches such as those of cala Petrolo and cala Marina, to the east of the town there is a long and deep beach (Plaja), while to the west the coast is presented with high rocks, coves and rocks, with wild vegetation and formidable sea views. After the beach of Guidaloca you reach the municipality of Scopello, a small peasant village, where, further down the sea, the tonnara complex rises, whose activity is documented since 1200 and lasted until a few decades ago. A little further on, between Scopello and San Vito lo Capo, the Zingaro Regional Nature Reserve was created at the foot of Mount Speziale, an oasis of exceptional interest with vegetation in which patches of euphorbia, asphodel, broom and palm trees mix. dwarfs that reach unusual dimensions here. The surroundings of Castellammare del Golfo are characterized by the presence of bagli, fortified farms built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, housing structures organized for the defense of local barons; they are diversified housing complexes, now similar to castles, now to manor houses, currently often in a state of neglect but increasingly being recovered and restructured to host agritourism businesses.

The city is also enjoyable in the evening where you can stroll through the stalls in the center along the illuminated port, for shopping lovers, along via Garibaldi you can find boutiques and shops; ceramic production which boasts an ancient tradition here is very popular. Numerous events embellish the holiday packages in Castellammare del Golfo, the Summer Jazz Festival is held in Pazzo Castello, seven days dedicated to this crazy musical genre lover of improvisation. In August the Feast of the Patroness Maria SS. del Soccorso with evocative processions of sea and land and with final fireworks.

THE SEGESTANE BATHS

In the province of Trapani there are the Segestane Baths (Castellammare del Golfo), which are among the most renowned spas in the Sicily region. The Terme Segestane are located in Castellammare del Golfo, in Ponte Bagni. They are fed by hyperthermal radioactive waters, which spring at a temperature of about 44 ° C from three springs along the banks of the nearby Hot River. In the spa there are two thermal pools, one of which for children, and the "queen's grotto" which is a real natural sauna. The establishment offers many treatments, including thermal baths, inhalation treatments, massages, aerosols and irrigations. Mud baths, whirlpools, caves and hot stoves complete the offer. The thermal waters are used to treat ENT, respiratory tract, musculoskeletal and metabolic diseases; they are also indicated for dermatological and rheumatic diseases.
